Blue Birds

After a week of craziness around home, I've finally got a second to post one of many things I want to share. Today, it is my recent obsession - the Blue Birds. They have been nesting in our boxes for about two years now, but this year I have trained them to eat out of a feeder. I feed them every morning. I don't know who looks forward to it more, the birds (getting food), or me(watching and taking pictures). Here are two pictures from this morning. The male bird has stocked up on mealworms and is taking them to the baby Blue Birds that have already hatched this year. I'll be posting pictures tomorrow of some new primitive items I've finished. I painted the lid to a great old picnic basket just in time for Memorial Day.

Hornby Eagles

Today's post is slightly off topic of primitives, but something so cool that I thought many of you would like to see. It is a website that has a live feed of an American eagle's nest complete with one baby eagle and one egg. I started watching the link yesterday, and keep it up on my computer screen so I can look at it when I walk by. I saw the eagle feed the baby yesterday - it was amazing. I hope you enjoy the site. Let me know what you think. www.hornbyeagles.com

Wonderful Weekend

The first wonderful part of my weekend was having my son come home from college for the summer. He turned 20 on Sunday. No matter how old my boys get, I still don't like it when they are away from home!! The other great part of my weekend was the shopping. I hit garage sales and flea markets and shopped til I dropped. I don't usually find so much in one weekend, but I did make the haul this time!! I found some amazing things for both my home and my shop. Some of my favorite finds are the white garden bench that I will paint black to match my shutters. I have been wanting a garden bench to sit under the big tree in our front yard, and this one was just $8.00. You won't recognize it after I paint and seal it. Other favorite finds are the two primitive shelves I got. They are both primitively perfect - no work needed. The black one on the left has three working drawers. The one on the right is two pieces. The piece on top is a peg rack - the pegs are square nails. The piece on bottom hangs from the peg piece by leather straps. It is done in a deep prim brown color. The antique spindle back child's chair is amazing. It has dry worn brown paint. I even found the prim doll that is sitting on the chair for just $1.00. The tiny size school desk will fit in my shop space perfectly. What a great weekend, enjoy the photos!

Treasures found

I usually don't venture out on a Friday morning for garage sales, but the lack of grocery shopping this week forced me to make an early run out. Sure glad I did. Look what I found! The braided carpet, pair of handcrafted cats (one from an old quilt), a primitive picture, the set of 12 Time Life Country books, 3 super size Christmas theme rubber stamps, and the double hook heavy-duty plant holder. ALL for a total of $18.50 - Now normally I stay away from rugs from someone else's house, but this one is like new and a reasonable size to clean just in case. For those of you who have not seen the Time Life books - GET A SET. I use them ALL THE TIME to pick paint colors, get decorating ideas, garden ideas, and just plain have a great time looking at the pictures. They are a MUST have in my opinion for primitive and colonial enthusiasts. Can't wait for tomorrow's sales!!

Antique High Chair Complete

The antique high chair is complete and will be heading to the shop today. This one was not fun to work on. It fought me all the way through. I am pleased with the way it turned out though. This will make a fun decorating item in someone's primitive or colonial home. I even had to have a bit of fun with it before I sent it off.

The Potting Shed

The weather is still too chilly here in PA to get back out into the garden. We had a brief early warm period, and I planted up a few containers, but have not been able to get the flat of impatients into the ground. When the weather warms, and the containers start to look good again, I'll post some pictures. I also have a large hen nesting box outside the pole barn that I like to plant up with vining flowers. We have a few tomato plants in the ground already, and the rest of the vegetable garden gets planted this weekend. Today, I'll use the chilly weather to get inside work done. I'm posting a picture of a sign I made using the wooden siding that was taken off our old farmhouse this fall. I'm going to put one in the shop. Think green!

Antique High Chair Project

Like most people, Mondays are very busy for me. On top of a regular work day, the house always needs extra attention because we run alot on the weekends. Normally, I'll have treasures from flea markets or garage sales to work on and prepare for the shop. This week, however, the temperatures in PA were chilly, and the wind gusts were so strong I felt like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz just before the house took off. The treasures this week amounted to a wonderful book on Folk Art from Country Living (that's a keeper), a stoneware pitcher, and a wooden goose that will become a "before & after" post very soon. So primitive work yesterday centered on an old high chair that was purchased at a flea market about a month ago. It's not finished (due to those busy Mondays), but here is a peek at how it' coming along.

Welcome to The Primitive Pineapple

Welcome to my blog - The Primitive Pineapple. The blog is centered around my passion of all things colonial & primitive and how to enjoy those things on a daily basis while on a budget. I'll share my weekend treasure hunt finds, things about our old farmhouse and the long process of renovating it, my favorite recipes, my gardening skills or lack there of, my trash to treasure projects, just a touch about my family, and just life in general. I am really looking forward to sharing my day with friends and hope to make them smile along the way.
